    Recently, a workshop for CEOs was launched at the Ningbo Research Institute of Northwestern Polytechnical University, aiming to foster the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ningbo.

    Huang Wei, academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, gave the first lecture of the workshop during his stay in Ningbo for a total of 56 Ningbo entrepreneurs. He expressed hope that the workshop would help to deepen cooperation with high-tech enterprises in Ningbo, thereby modernizing Ningbo's industrial sector and boosting its competitiveness. 

    Disruptive Technologies

    are Reshaping the Future

    During the lecture, Huang gave a brief introduction of flexible electronics, a disruptive technology that has captured attention worldwide and has undergone rapid development in recent years.

    Electronic displays that can be folded like a handkerchief, clothing that can monitor vital signs, and adhesive bandages capable of tracking body temperature, heart rate and blood glucose... To many, these might be the stuff of science fiction.However, with the application of flexible electronic technology, they have become reality.

    Huang believes that flexible electronic technology will dramatically change conventional devices and information systems, altering their physical form from being "rigid" to "flexible".

    "It will transform the way information is collected, processed, transmitted and displayed, and bring us closer to the goal of a truly interconnected world," said Huang.

    For Huang's team, which have made a series of breakthroughs in basic research, the next phase is to found a startup to manufacture products, seek investment from a venture capital firm, or partner with a government body that could provide the resources to enable commercialization.

    The core material for flexible electronics is graphene, a flat sheet of carbon just one atom thick.  "I hope we could create a 'Carbon Valley' in Ningbo through the collaboration of the public and private sectors. In the coming five years, we will hopefully see the positive outcomes of this endeavor," said Huang.

    Seeking Talents and

    the Latest Technology

    Many eager entrepreneurs participated in the workshop expecting to learn more about cutting -edge technologies. Yu Bo, the founder of Ningbo Weicheng Technology Company, is one of them.

    "We have developed a series of factory safety systems. For us, access to talents and advanced technology is the most important strategic resource. Through this workshop, we are seeking the latest scientific research results," he said.

    The Ningbo Research Institute of Northwestern Polytechnical University is composed of five technical research centers focusing on aerospace, electronic information, unmanned navigation, intelligent chips, satellites and big data applications. 

    Through the workshop, Yu hopes to develop a closer partnership with research institutes and explore future cooperation opportunities.

    Many of the participating entrepreneurs cited technical bottlenecks in their businesses as their main reason for signing up. Sun Zhongjie, founder of Ningbo Times Aluminum Foil Technology Company, admitted that his company faces various technical challenges in production. For instance, the advanced technology behind precision molds and coating materials is currently still being controlled by foreign countries. 

    "We develop and manufacture aluminum foil products for self-heating rice and hotpot. In 2020, the company's output value reached 300 million," Sun said. As China upholds the ban on single-use plastics, the application of aluminum foil will be more extensive.

    Fostering More

    "Hidden Champions"

    A total of 15 enterprises from Ningbo recently made the list of Zhejiang Provincial "hidden champions" in 2020.

    The term "hidden champions" was coined in 1990 by Hermann Simon, a German business professor and management consultant. The concept refers to highly successful companies, often market leaders in a specific niche market, yet not known to the wider public. 

    They are usually small and medium-sized enterprises with products and services that are difficult to surpass or imitate.

    In 2020, Ningbo's GDP totaled 1.24087 trillion yuan, registering a yearly uptick of 3.3 percent, according to preliminary statistics released by the Ningbo Municipal Statistics Bureau on Jan 26.

    "We are aiming to foster more 'hidden champions' by supporting technology-driven SMEs with nationally-leading economic and innovation potential, and producing a group of pioneering SME brands," said a representative from the Ningbo Municipal Economic and Information Technology Bureau.

    "Through this approach, we want to make Ningbo Zhejiang's benchmark city for cultivating technology-driven 'hidden champions'," he added.
