Recently, the Yangtze River Delta Railway's updated train schedules for the 2021 Dragon Boat Festival was released. 122 new pairs of trains have been added to cope with the passenger surge.
During the Festival, the Yangtze River Delta Railway is expected to transport more than 12.8 million passengers, with the daily average passenger volume exceeding 2.5 million, higher than the same period in 2019. June 12 will be the busiest day, with an anticipated 3 million passengers. Both the number of passengers and the frequency of trains are expected to hit a record high.
In May this year, the Railway transported 65.988 million passengers, an increase of 1.327 million compared with the same period in 2019, with a year-on-year growth of 2%. It is the first time that the monthly passenger traffic on the Yangtze River Delta Railway witnesses positive growth since the outbreak of COVID-19. The daily average number of passengers for May was 2.129 million, accounting for 22.9% of the national railway passenger volume. 3.652 million trips were made on May 1 alone, setting a record high for the single-day passenger volume on the Yangtze River Delta Railway.
The first and final days of the Dragon Boat Festival will be peak travel times. The public's willingness to travel is returning, and demand for tourism is recovering rapidly.
Many short-distance passengers will be travelling between large cities and tourist destinations in the Yangtze River Delta area, while most medium-distance passenger will be making trips within the four-hour radius of high-speed rail.
Last year, a number of new railway lines were put into operation, connecting more towns and cities with regional urban hubs. The passenger flow will continue to grow.
