    On October 11, the three-day 7^th Zhejiang Book Fair concluded at the Ningbo International Convention and Exhibition Center. As the main venue of the Fair, the Center hosted booths for 300 publishers in ten pavilions. Over 20,000 titles were showcased and more than 100 new books were launched.

    Over the three days, the Fair saw 61,200 visitors who purchased a combined 4.53 million yuan of books and merchandise.

    Iconic Elements

    at Ningbo Pavilion

    One of the highlights of the Book Fair was the Ningbo pavilion. With the theme "Celebrating Ningbo's 1,200 Founding Anniversary", the pavilion's centerpiece was modeled after Tianyige Library's Baoshulou (valuable book storage building). Decorated to resemble a traditional Chinese garden, the pavilion evokes the image of a southern Chinese water town.

    At the pavilion, the Ningbo Publishing House exhibited over 100 books about Ningbo's history and culture. It also hosted around 20 activities that highlighted the city's culture, including music salons, recitations, and new book discussions. Notably, in the pavilion's imitation Baoshulou, visitors could play the popular game jubensha, a role-playing murder mystery game.

    "The game was fun to play; at the same time, I learned a lot about Tianyige Library's history and culture. The game did a good job combining joy with knowledge," said one visitor.

    Diverse Events Popular

    with Book-lovers

    The Fair's "Firefly Book Exchange" was highly popular with visitors. In this area, people could put up their own books for exchange, design a new book cover for newly-exchanged books, or simply enjoy a quiet moment reading.

    Though the book exchange started in 2014, this year is its debut at the Zhejiang Book Fair. The number of regular members has grown from a mere 1,000 to over 20,000. This year, a total of 100,000 readers participated.

    This was Xia Zhiyao's second time participating in the book exchange. As an instructor at the Zhejiang Business Technology Institute, she considered it a meaningful activity for readers. "I usually read books on economics. When I came to the event, I saw many books on other fields of study. The process of discovering new books broadened my mind," said Xia.

    In the book cover DIY area, readers could wrap their newly-exchanged books in eco-friendly paper of different colors and styles. "I really like the look of these book covers that I designed by myself," said Ms. Shen.

    Author-Reader Dialogues

    Many renowned authors came to the Book Fair to hold discussion groups with their readers.

    Chen Hui, a native Ningbo author, shared her life experience and what writing meant to her. Some people consider her successful because she managed to publish two books while working as a greengrocer. In her opinion, being published does not equal success. "Success is not about the number of books published; it is an attitude to life," said Chen.

    She said that if a person could persevere in doing anything for more than ten years, good results would surely come. Chen defines success as a positive attitude towards life in spite of life's challenges and distractions.

    Lu Yingong, the author of Xiaoshede (A Little Dilemma) returned to his alma mater, Zhenhai High School of Ningbo, to share the stories behind his creative process. "Many students and teachers from my high school were the inspiration for my characters," said Lu.

    The author's event at the high school was themed Writing Near Zhenhai High School. He explained that Zhenhai High School was both geographically close to him and closely associated with his creative process.

    From 1981 to 1986, Lu Yingong lived near the school, so close that he could see the buildings from his balcony. "I think I am the closest writer to Zhenhai High School of Ningbo," he said. It was in those six years that he decided to become a writer.

    Lu was greatly inspired by many of his fellow and classmates and teachers. He even interviewed some of them before writing his stories. In this sense, Zhenhai High School lies close to his creativity.

    This was the third time in ten years that Lu had returned to his alma mater to share his experiences both as a writer and reader with the students and teachers. Each time, he gains a lot of new insight.
