As the owner of China's first bio-jet fuel device, Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company has obtained the certification of Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) on sustainable biomaterials. The first set of domestic bio-jet fuel plant with an annual production of 100,000 tons has also been fully equipped and will enter trial production in the near future.
"Obtaining the certification means that the bio-jet fuel device, the raw material, and the sustainable aviation fuel, have been approved by RSB for application," said Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical manager. This is the first RSB certification for sustainable aviation fuel in Asia. It will help China's self-developed bio-jet fuel to go abroad, open the international market, while enhancing the industrialization and commercialization of such sustainable aviation fuel.
In fact, this is not the first project launched by Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical in the field of bio-jet fuel combustion.
In 2009, Sinopec started the research and development of bio-jet fuel. The Zhenhai branch volunteered for the R&D of "Green Aviation Oil".
In 2014, Zhenhai Refining & Chemical has obtained first airworthiness certificate of bio-jet fuel by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
In later years, flights empowered by the bio-jet fuel produced by the Zhenhai company successively completed commercial and cross ocean tasks, helping China become the fourth country with independent R&D and production technology of bio-jet fuel after the United States, France, and Finland.
Experts believe that bio-jet fuel is promising for the "greening" of aviation fuel globally as it is produced from renewable resources. The raw materials mainly include waste oil, palm oil, and other animal and vegetable oil sources. Compared with traditional petroleum-based aviation fuel, bio-jet fuel can reduce carbon emissions by more than 50% in life cycle.
