Matthew Galat is an American video blogger with over 100k followers on Twitter and 600k on Douyin, TikTok’s sister app. He came to Ningbo in 2009 and now lives in Yinzhou District with his family.

    On the afternoon of February 3rd, he shot a video in Yinzhou District for his upcoming series titled “Follow Matt to visit Yinzhou” and then streamed it on platforms such as Douyin, Bilibili, Toutiao, Twitter and YouTube, to present mouth-watering treats and impressive sites of a Chinese new year in Ningbo to the world.

    Cai Tongli, a Ningbo local, introduces the history of the Cai’s Ancestral Hall to Matt

    Matt, 41, was born in Detroit, USA. He made his first fortune by selling products labeled “Made in China” years ago; then in 2009 he moved to Ningbo alone and later married with a Chinese woman.

    Years of living in China has turned him into a China hand and a fluent speaker of the Ningbo dialect. He calls himself a foreigner with advanced proficiency in this local dialect.

    Matt once cycled around the world. In his eyes, China is one of the safest countries in the world, and people around the world need to have a fuller view of China.

    “I've lived in Ningbo for so many years. Getting to know this place is like peeling an onion layer by layer. It’s very interesting,” he said with a smile.

    During this Chinese New Year in 2021, Matt will celebrate the festival with his family in Ningbo. His intention is to introduce the typical local food and tourist destinations to netizens at home and abroad. So, he kicked off his “Follow Matt to Visit Yinzhou” plan on the afternoon of February 3rd, and the first destination was the Cai’s Ancestral Hall in Panhuo, Yinzhou District.

    The Cai's Ancestral Hall, whose architectural layout and construction techniques are characteristic of its type in Ningbo, boasts a history of over 400 years.

    “The Cai's Ancestral Hall is dedicated to deified ancestors both male and female. It’s the first of its kind in Zhejiang and also rare across the whole country.” Cai Tongli, a Ningbo local aged 78, introduced the hall to Matt who listened with great interest as a Chinese culture lover. At present, the Ningbo Iron and Pewter Ware Museum has made its home in the hall, making it a cultural space that combines history with public service activities.

    Upon entering the workshop next to the ancestral hall, Matt’s eyes were glued to the needlework such as incense bags, tiger-head shoes and knitting wool handicrafts. Several folk craftsmen were also engaged in textile crafts.

    Over the following days, Matt will visit more sites in Yinzhou district and record life with his lens.
