    What does Ningbo look like to Asian diplomats? Recently, a delegation of consuls general of Asian countries in Shanghai visited Ningbo by invitation.

    Among them are a total of 28 diplomats from 15 countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Singapore, Cambodia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Laos, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Kuwait, Iran and South Korea.

    On the afternoon of 25th May, two reporters from Ningbo Daily   followed the footsteps of the consular officials and visited Fujialu Village, located in Chongshou Town, Cixi City. Upon seeing the cleanliness and beauty of the countryside as well as the happy and wealthy life here, the consuls, who came to Ningbo for the first time, were filled with admiration.

    Fujialu Village, currently a large village with over ten thousand residents, was constructed by ancestors through ponding and enclosing. Poverty was eradicated in 2010 and the average annual income of its villagers reached RMB 43,000 last year.

    In the village, many facilities, including the theatre, the cultural park, the square, the 3,000-metre-long fitness trail and ubiquitous small landscaped parks, are now inviting recreational attractions for villagers. Cafes with white facades, supermarkets and painting and calligraphy workshops in the commercial and leisure area add an urban tone to the countryside.

    “At first, I thought I had come to a resort, but only two decades ago it was a poor and backward village,” said Ninh Thanh Cong, Consul General of Vietnam in Shanghai, who is a first-time visitor to Ningbo and a fluent Chinese speaker. After learning about the radical changes in Fujialu village in recent years, he told the reporter that the houses here, built in a very modern way, resemble gardens and the people enjoy not only a high standard of living but also a rich and happy leisure life, such as writing poetry, painting, singing and dancing. “This is an excellent model for rural revitalization in China, especially the collective economic development model, which is very worthy of our study.”

    “I love here so much!” Nawab Ali Rahoojo, Deputy Consul General of Pakistan in Shanghai, enthused while receiving clay figures and “fu” characters made on site by the villagers. He was astounded by the town’s annual exports worth nearly USD 5 million of goods and accessories of all sorts to Asian countries. “This place is civilized, affluent, and harmonious. Many hospitable and friendly villagers waved to welcome us while we were walking on the road. I believe all foreign visitors will fall in love with this place as much as I did.”

    On the next day, the delegation paid a field visit to the container terminal and Meishan international logistic hub built by Maersk, a Danish integrated container shipping service provider, and co-run by Blue Dragon Meishan Logistics Co. Ltd., in the Meishan Bonded Port Area to gain more insight into the development and planning of the area.

    The downpour on Meishan Island at around 10am did not dampen the diplomats’ enthusiasm for the visit. In 2020, Meishan Port’s container throughput reached 5.44 million TEUs and 330,000 ro-ro vehicles, while this year’s container throughput is expected to reach 6 million TEUs and 365,000 ro-ro vehicles, introduced by the staff from Ningbo Meidong Container Terminal Co. Ltd. The diplomats all gave big thumb-ups to the impressive achievements delivered by Meishan Port and took a group photo with the imposing bridge crane as the background.

    Afterwards, the diplomats visited the Maersk’s Meishan international logistic hub and were attracted by the fully-automated stereoscopic warehouse, in which 40 automated guided vehicles (AGV) and 10 automatic storage machines were shuttling as per instructions, as well as the autonomous storage system, under which the in-, ex-warehouse and in-store maintenance in the giant warehouse are fully automated.

    “Ningbo’s economic achievements, especially in international trade, are spectacular!” Thailand’s Consul General in Shanghai, Lada Phumas, who came to Ningbo for the first time, told the reporter that despite the impact of the epidemic, the total volume of trade between China and Thailand climbed by 8% in 2020, while that between Thailand and Zhejiang province hiked by 25%, “Ningbo is one of the important cities in Zhejiang, and I believe Ningbo played an essential role behind these increasing figures, and hope we will have more cooperation with Ningbo through this visit.”

    Many consuls said in interviews that the two-day visit was comprehensive and informative - covering the natural scenery, the rural construction, as well as the international port - and that Ningbo has done a great job!

    The delegation also attended the “The Belt and Road Countries in Asia Exhibition 2021”at Ningbo Library in the afternoon of May 26th.
