Ningbo Museum Stuns Viewers in Blockbuster TV Series Three-Body
Since the release of Three-Body – a live-action TV series based on Liu Cixin’s sci-fi novel – Ningbo Museum, as the filming location for Asian Defense Council Operations Center, has also gained more exposure and popularity.
自刘慈欣的《三体》真人版电视剧开播,剧中亚洲防御理事会作战中心取景地宁波博物馆也火了。
This sci-fi trilogy, including The Three-body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End, has won the title of Best Novel of the 73rd Hugo Awards and is hailed as the most outstanding sci-fi novel in modern China. Therefore, any news about movie or series adaptations of this critically acclaimed trilogy attracts much attention and anticipation.
After the official release of this series, sci-fi fans of the trilogy have surprisingly spotted “Ningbo elements” in the first episode. Scenes filmed with Wang Miao and Shi Qiang at the The Asian Defense Council Operations were located at Ningbo Museum.
There are good reasons for movies and series to use the museum as a filming location. The distinctive architecture of Ningbo Museum represents the “new vernacular style” of Wang Shu, the first Chinese Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Having a bird’s eye view like a boat and an upward view of rolling mountains, it has won the Luban Award, the highest honor in Chinese architectural circles. Its exterior design highlights the style of Jiangnan (south of the Changjiang River) houses: old bricks, tiles, and clay shards accumulated from city restoration are stacked into a “tile wall” of 24 meters and decorated with fair-faced concrete that was cast in special moulds made from Jiangnan bamboo.
Filming only took place when the museum was closed for the sake of the visiting public. In addition to the exterior and panorama of the museum, as well as the streets nearby, many scenes were shot in the public areas inside.
The shooting at Ningbo Museum lasted for 2 days. Apart from Ningbo Museum, the Three-Body crew also spent one day shooting a café scene at a tea house named “The Story of Tea” at Ningbo Culture Plaza, as you may have noted in the aired episodes.
The Three-Body crew used 3 simple studios in Hengdian World Studios, the TV and film base of China, and filmed some scenes at Dazhi Temple, a famous local tourist destination.
而作为影视基地的横店,《三体》不仅用了3个简易棚拍摄,还在当地有名的大智禅寺取景。
Dazhi Temple was known to be built during the Southern Liang Dynasty (502-557) at the homestead of General Shentu Di, who donated his property for the building. Built over 1500 years ago, this temple boasts a history longer than the world-renowned Guoqing Temple, an ancient temple built in Tiantai Mountain in the Sui Dynasty (581-618). Dazhi Temple has been relocated and was rebuilt in January 1994, covering an area of 280 mu with a building area of 20,000 square meters.
Now that the series finale has been released, followers of Three-Body whose interest has been piqued, might be encouraged to have a set-jetting visit to Ningbo Museum, where they can experience Ningbo culture and recall iconic scenes from the TV series.
