Former Croatian Vice Premier Visits Ningbo Municipal Hospital of TCM
On the afternoon of May 19, Croatia’s former Vice Premier and Ambassador to China Ante Simonic and his wife visited Ningbo Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a cultural exchange. After experiencing acupuncture, tuina massage, fire cupping and other Chinese medicine therapies, they were left in awe and developed a more intuitive and profound understanding of TCM.
Their tour started at the in-house pharmacy, where the couple learned about the inventory of prepared slices of Chinese crude drugs, TCM prescriptions and dispensing procedures, as well as its R&D of Chinese patent medicine. In response to the ambassador’s eagerness for the diagnostic and treatment principles of Chinese Materia Medica, Yu Weifang – director of the pharmacy – explained that TCM practitioners usually adhere to traditional theories and diagnose patterns before prescribing personalized medication. Typically, each prescription consists of over ten kinds of medicinal materials.
During the visit, Mr. Simonic demonstrated a keen interest in the diseases that TCM proves most efficient in treating. He specifically inquired about the treatment for myocardial infarction (heart attack) and prostate hyperplasia (enlargement), the incidence rate of the latter being relatively high among elderly men in Croatia. Upon discovering that TCM boasts a potent cure for such an ailment, the former Vice Premier sensed an air of anticipation and indicated his hope for future possibilities to further develop TCM in Europe.
Exceptional tuina techniques deeply impressed Mr. Simonic at the department of pediatric tuina massage. Doctor Bao Tingfeng adeptly employed various massage techniques, such as pressing, kneading, vibrating, and pinching, to treat young patients with digestive disorders and gastrointestinal illnesses. Moreover, Bao’s skillful use of the above massage techniques has greatly improved the symptoms of a 6-month-old infant suffering from wryneck (a distortion of the neck).
The ambassador’s fascination with non-pharmaceutical healing techniques, specifically in Chinese medicine therapies, served as a catalyst for his pursuit of advanced knowledge in the field. This led him to undertake a comprehensive learning journey and hone his practical skills in acupuncture, therapeutic tuina massage, and therapeutic cupping, where he witnessed their remarkable effectiveness and derived immense personal satisfaction.
At the preventive health center, a human body model which displays the meridians and acupoints captured the guest’s attention. It was then offered to him as a souvenir by the hospital out of kindness.

Ante Simonic served as Vice Premier of Croatia in charge of science, education, culture, health and sports, and professor and dean of the Pharmacology Department at the School of Medicine of the University of Rijeka. Over the years, he has been making efforts to enhance friendship between China and Croatia, particularly through promoting sports diplomacy and TCM in Croatia. On numerous occasions, Simonic has extended admiration and respect for TCM. Now he intends to expand the reach of TCM culture while utilizing the advantageous location of Croatia to spread the application of TCM therapies throughout Europe. Local patients can then avail themselves of diverse Chinese medical treatments, such as acupuncture, fire cupping, tuina massage, and moxibustion. As a result of consistent applications and verifiable results, Simonic believes that the world would witness growing confidence in the efficacy of TCM along with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.
