15-year Endeavour: A River Dragon Boat Rows to the Sea
Four dragon-boat generations in a family, Guanying Villige
During this Dragon Boat Festival, resounding echoes of drums and gongs permeated along the Yanshangan River. The ongoing dragon boat race remained a remarkable spectacle to behold in Yunlong Town of Yinzhou District, Ningbo.
今年端午,沿山干河里龙舟竞逐、锣鼓喧天的场景,成为宁波鄞州区云龙镇最独特的一道风景。
“Around this time of year, we would watch dragon boat races along the banks of the Yanshangan River. This custom has become a cherished reminiscence of the Dragon Boat Festival, spanning from my childhood to adulthood,”said Zhang Beini, a 16-year-old native of Guanying Village in Yunlong Town and the youngest member of the Guanying Village Women’s Dragon Boat Team. On that particular day, she stood upon the riverbank, capturing highlights of the dragon boat race.
Guanying Village Dragon Boat Team emerged in 1990s when nine ardent villagers voluntarily secured funds for two dragon boats, giving birth to this branded team of Guanying Village. Among the locals, the true story of four generations within a single family united by the shared pursuit of dragon boat spirit marks a household tale.
As Zhang Beini recounted, when she was 7 years old, her father carried her onto a dragon boat for the first time. Prompted by the exhilarating drum beats and cheers from the shore, she was immersed in the scene with sheer delight. From that moment onwards, spectacles of dragon boat races have become a source of pleasure in her leisure life. At the age of 11, she joined the Guanying Village Women’s Dragon Boat Team and assumed the role of a drummer.
“My 93-year-old grandfather Zhang Lin is one of the first dragon boat paddlers in Yunlong Town. My father Zhang Yunguo, 70 years old, is also a paddler. And Zhang Beini, my daughter, is currently a drummer in the women’s dragon boat team. She grew up by the water watching dragon boat races.” Zhang Chenzhou, 41 years old, is a key member of the Guanying Village Dragon Boat Team and also the father of Zhang Beini. He recounted with a hint of pride in his eyes.
Twenty-four years ago, Zhang Chenzhou joined the Guanying Village Dragon Boat Team at the age of 17. “I would do the drill for 2 hours every day, except for bad weather conditions or business trips. It becomes a part of my life, and refraining from it makes me uneasy. So as long as I can wield a paddle, I will keep doing it and carrying the dreams of my forerunners forward to future generations and outward to the world.”
In 1976, a bronze battle axe carved with patterns of ancient people wearing plumed hats paddling a boat was excavated among the Shitutou Mountain in Jiacun Village, Yunlong Town. This national-level cultural relic from the Warring States Period (475-221BC) traced the history of dragon boat races back over 2,000 years ago. Starting in 2009, Yunlong Town has been hosting annual dragon boat races for 15 consecutive years. And each village of the town boasts its own dragon boats. And dragon boat traditions have evolved into a heritage, ingrained and carried forward following the bloodline of villagers.
In 2014, Yunlong Town was awarded the title of “Hometown of Chinese Dragon Boat Culture”. Over the years, the town has been committed to the inheritance of dragon boat culture, upholding traditions while embracing innovation.
Last year’s Dragon Boat Festival, Yunlong Town participated in a competition on behalf of Ningbo with the city of Veresegyház, Hungary. This April, its dragon boat set sail to cross the border for the first time, transported to Bulgaria as a gift to promote cultural exchange between China and Central and Eastern European countries.
A dragon boat drives and steers an entire town. The spirit of teamwork and striving for excellence impacts the people of Yunlong for generations. In the face of typhoon defense, epidemic prevention, or disaster relief, members of the dragon boat team are always the vanguard. Over the past two years, this spirit has also exerted a subtle and all-round influence on local economic development, infrastructure construction, grassroots governance and other aspects; every individual strives to be a helpful paddler that makes a difference. Now, the dragon boat has become a magnetic icon absorbing ever-increasingly powerful strength. Accompanied by the vital rhythm of drum beats, this dragon boat, sailing from Ningbo to the whole country, and now towards the world, is breeding new opportunities and dreams.
