“Never did I expect that our original work would make it on the international stage. In this piece, I incorporated elements of Chinese traditional opera such as the water-sleeve dance and received unanimous praise from abroad. This reaffirms the charm of traditional Chinese culture, and I couldn’t be prouder!” Exclaimed Zhang Shuting, a member of Ningbo’s youth art delegation.
From August 23 to 26, the youth art delegation from Ningbo visited Jeju, South Korea to participate in the 2023 Culture Capital of East Asia exchange campaign. There, young talents from China, Japan, and South Korea channeled art and music into a range of cultural exchange activities.
At the closing ceremony, the Chinese delegation staged the dance “Guest Amidst the Misty Mountains”, the Chinese-style song “Blue and White Porcelain”, the 24-solar-term-themed song “Autumn Equinox”, along with other Chinese performances. Their live show left a profound impression on counterparts from Japan and South Korea, receiving a huge ovation.
Wang Luxin, Chinese Consul General to Jeju, extended his affection after the show, “Youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. They are expected to bear the responsibility of making China’s voice heard and promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture. During their days in Jeju, the young generation from Ningbo showcased the splendid image and charm of Ningbo as a city of culture and China as a beautiful country. They successfully fueled youthful vitality into cultural inheritance and exchange.”
The original artwork of this cultural exchange campaign witnessed the remarkable performances of young talents from China, Japan, and South Korea in traditional operas, drumming, calligraphy, painting ...
Cheng Sizhe from Zhejiang Business Technology Institute introduced, “‘The Song We Learn Together’ is my original creation. It captures the moments we spend together and the profound friendship we’ve built over these days. Through a vote in our group, we decided to perform this song at the show.”
“Thanks to this exchange event, I’ve become aware of the close connections within the East Asian cultural sphere. For instance, the moment I heard the Korean Taepyeongso flute, the bone whistle (a type of flute) from my hometown Hemudu Village in Yuyao County popped into my head,” added Zhang Ruofei, a member of the delegation.
To the proud delight of Fan Jie (leader of the delegation and Deputy Chair of the Ningbo Choral Society) during the cultural exchange trip to Jeju, these Ningbo-based members – after experiencing the Korean agricultural art of Samulnori – immediately decided to adapt and perform a Chinese-style song of “Autumn Equinox”. Their remarkable collaboration derived from one of the Chinese 24 solar terms, which marks the harvest season anticipated by farmers, ended in a success in the shortest time possible.
According to reports, the Ningbo-based youth delegation is set to embark on their next journey to Nara, Japan, continuing the story of culture capitals of East Asia.
