The ongoing 19th Asian Games exudes a heartwarming ambiance despite fierce competitions. A Hong Kong girl of Ningbo descent said in Ningbo dialect when interviewed at the Ningbo Asian Games Athletes’ Village that, she wished to taste authentic Ningbo rice cakes; it soon drew extensive attention. In a few days, she will finish her service to Asiad in her hometown Ningbo and return to Hong Kong.
It is reported that this post-1990s Hong Kong girl, named Fang Keqiao, serves as a team official of the Chinese Hong Kong delegation, engaging in psychological counseling at the Games. Although she had a strong desire to experience more of the “Ningbo atmosphere,” her tight schedule and strict discipline left her with no opportunity to explore and savor the local delights.
To fulfill the small wish of Fang, at 7:45 a.m. on the morning of September 23rd, reporters of Ningbo Evening News – fueled by the “enthusiasm of Ningbo locals” – took the earliest bus to the Xiangshan Asian Sailing Center in Ningbo, waiting for the young fellow townswoman at the athletes’ entrance.
Interestingly, it was Fang who recognized the reporters first: “Have I become so much fairer that it kept you from recognizing me? When we first met, I didn’t even have time to wash my face and I was so tanned. Today, I applied a lot of sunscreen powder.” Days of interviews and interactions have made her form a cordial friendship with the reporters.
Fang was stunned for several seconds by the well-prepared “Ningbo gifts” in the media center and exclaimed, “Wow! This is such a pleasant surprise!”
在媒体中心见到大家送给她的“宁波礼物”,方可乔原地愣了好几秒:“哇!这也太惊喜了!”
“Having learned that you’d like to try Ningbo rice cake, a local rice cake producer in Cicheng sent you two large boxes of its products, along with exquisite mooncakes and a tea food box. Considering that you didn’t have time to explore your hometown this time, the Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism has prepared the book ‘Taste of Ningbo’ and a hand-drawn tourist map of Ningbo for you, hoping you’ll come back to Ningbo more often in the future. Furthermore, we have ‘Surname Seals’ and ancient-style cultural and creative items from Tianyi Ge Museum, as well as the ‘Ten Miles of Red Wedding’ blind box from the Ningbo Museum. And you can also see a commemorative edition of the Ningbo Evening News’ front-page frame ....” Fang was overjoyed by the reporters’ introduction.
“I love food and reading; these are indeed amazing!” Fang exclaimed. She was immersed in the excitement of smelling the rice cakes, opening the blind box, and taking photos with her “self on the front page of Ningbo Evening News”.
Later, she took out of her bag a Hong Kong version of the Asian Games emblem and some snacks for the reporters as a “thank-you gift.”
随后,她从包里掏出一枚港版亚运徽章以及小零食送给记者当作“回礼”。
To help fulfill the dream of this Hong Kong “hometown girl,” the reporters had previously visited the ancestral village of Fang in Ningbo, known as Fangjia Village in Jishigang town.
为了替这位香港“小老乡”圆梦,之前记者还替方可乔走访了宁波老家——集士港方家村。
Fangjia Village is currently the home to 132 households with a total population of 349 residents, predominantly surnamed Fang. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, they migrated from Linhai City, Taizhou, Zhejiang to settle in this village. In 2004, the village merged with Yangguanqiao Village and Wangchun Village to form the present Wanzhong Village. Today, Fangjia Village has preserved its ancestral hall and some old houses, with some villagers moving to the town or the “Fangjia New Village” residential area. Walking into the original Fangjia Village which features blue bricks, small tiles, and horsehead walls, one can clearly witness a splendid transformation and enjoy the beautiful rural landscape of a clean village, picturesque scenery, and prosperous residents.
Rather pitifully, the old house of Fang Keqiao’s family has been demolished. However, the former village secretary of Fangjia Village, Mr. Fang Jifa, is still left with a vivid impression of her grandfather’s family. He welcomes Fang to come back to the village to trace her family history during her free time, finally adding: “I am currently working on a picture of the old appearance of Fangjia Village in the 1950s. After it’s done, I can give a copy to Keqiao.”
