In a recent archaeological breakthrough in Ningbo, the remnants of an ancient settlement during the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD, 25 – 220 AD) and the Six Dynasties (222 – 589 AD) have come to light amidst the expansion of Yuyao No.1 Experimental Primary School, nestled within the Lizhou Street of Yuyao County. What adds an intriguing layer to this discovery is the uncovering of two unprecedented archaeological sites replete with artifacts in the immediate vicinity.
Back in 2018, in a rescue excavation on Weixing Road in Yuyao, many exquisite cultural relics from the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 AD) – including bronze wares, porcelain, lacquerware, iron artifacts and coins – were unearthed.

Apart from the site currently unearthed in Lizhou subdistrict, Yuyao also witnessed the discovery of another Han and Six Dynasties site in Huayuan New Village in 2020. Since the site has yielded extremely valuable documents such as bamboo slips, wooden tablets with seals and inscriptions on both sides, it was listed at provincial-level as an important archaeological discovery in Zhejiang for 2020.
Inspired by the dense archaeological findings in such a tiny area, netizens couldn’t help but marvel at the rich cultural and historical heritage of Yuyao, an “archaeological trove” in east Zhejiang Province.
Intriguingly, the archaeological trinity may harbor insights into the city’s evolution and transformation.
那么,从相连成片的这三处遗址、遗迹中,藏着什么样的城市发展变迁密码?
“These archaeological discoveries have made substantial contributions to our research of Yuyao’s development,” responded Xu Chao, an archaeologist affiliated with the Ningbo Institute of Cultural Heritage Management. He underscored the fact that before this new finding historical records documenting the city’s changes were sparse, most notably from the Han to the Six Dynasties. Layers of Yuyao’s past lie right beneath the modern city, and the expansion of this primary school unearthed a rare opportunity for significant archaeological excavation.
In recent years, continuous archaeological endeavors have unfolded in the southern parts of Yuyao, encompassing the excavation of the Yuyao Weixing Road Cellar Site, and two Han and Six Dynasties sites located at the Huayuan New Village, and the Yuyao No.1 Experimental Primary School.
As archeologist Xu elaborates, “The proximity of the three sites presents a unique process of excavation. Much like completing a jigsaw puzzle, we progressively reconstruct the historical panorama of that era and constantly acquire further understanding of the nature of these relics.”
These archaeological revelations also stand as a testament to Yuyao’s profound historical and cultural heritage. As relayed by Xu, the site at this primary school houses densely distributed water wells and a considerable number of everyday ceramic artifacts. Another special note is the discovery of a detachable bronze tree lamp with a unique design, notably with bamboo-like holders, showcasing an exceptional level of craftsmanship. All these findings offer a magnifying lens into historical details.
“Most importantly, the excavation site at the Yuyao No.1 Experimental Primary School had housed the imperial academy of Yuyao for over 1000 years, from about the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 AD). The latest revelation, dating further to 2000 years ago, unveils the secrets of this city further back,” remarks Xu. “And it highlights the rich and prominent tapestry of Yuyao’s development and evolution.”
