Money orders from “Shun qi zi ran”.
On November 15, Ningbo Charity Federation received an envelope containing a stack of money orders from “Shun ran”, the city’s well-known anonymous donor known by the alias “Shun qi zi ran” (meaning “let things take their own course”).
This marks the 25th consecutive year that the mysterious donor has granted money to the federation since 1999. This year, the donation hit a record high – 1.08 million yuan, culminating in a total of 15.77 million yuan.
For the past 25 years, the federation has received funds annually from the anonymous donor and each money order is worth no more than 10,000 yuan, because otherwise the order has to be signed with the donor’s real name according to bank rules. The signature on the envelope usually reads “Shun qi zi ran” and its variants such as “Shun shun”, “Shun qi” or “Ran ran” from “No.1, Zhongshan Road”, a non-existent address.
According to the federation, the donor left a note with the first donation, quoting “Neither practice acts of evilness nor hype acts of kindness. Just let it be.” The brief words on the letter demonstrated the donor’s desire to remain anonymous. Out of respect, the federation gave up searching for the person’s identity after the third year of donations, despite some clues about the donor being available. Accordingly, keeping the identity of “Shun qi zi ran” unknown has also been a consensus among the locals of Ningbo.
In accordance with the donor’s wishes, the money has been used for educational purposes and the details are disclosed in an open and timely way. So far, beneficiaries have included more than 2,000 college students and several underdeveloped areas outside Ningbo.
“Regarding the donation from last year, 1.01 million yuan was allocated to improve the educational facilities in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Southwest China’s Sichuan province. The remaining 50,000 yuan was deployed to build a live broadcast platform in Ningbo.” The staff of the Federation further revealed the debut of live broadcasting under the name of “Shun qi zi ran” at Ningbo Economic and Trade School (a vocational high school). The aim of the project is to assist students from Liangshan to learn courses including logistics and e-commerce and it is believed to offer a window to promote the local produce of Liangshan.
To respond to such kindness by doing kindness, the beneficiaries of the anonymous donation continue to express gratitude in various ways, some of whom follow this donation-initiator’s example by donating their first salary. This extension of goodwill counts as the best reaction to the anonymous donor.
Thanks to the extended impact of the individual’s anonymous donations, more than 5,000 people in Ningbo have donated a total of more than 50 million yuan to the federation for the past 25 years. The legend of “Shun qi zi ran” has become the hallmark for building Ningbo into a city of kindness, and philanthropy has been profoundly integrated into the daily lives of the people in Ningbo.
