On December 19, forty-odd elderly people each received a pair of new cotton shoes at the Comprehensive Elderly Service Center in Zhonghe Subdistrict, Yinzhou District. These shoes were handmade by 73-year-old Li Wenqing, endearingly addressed as “Granny Cotton-Shoes”.
A pair of cotton shoes, with a material cost of about 15 yuan, is a modest gesture of love when given to someone in need. Yet, Li Wenqing has persisted in this small act of goodwill for 12 years, having entrusted the community to distribute over 700 pairs of cotton shoes.
Making and giving away cotton shoes, as Granny Li mentioned, is a hobby rooted in love. “As long as there is a need, I will continue to make them.” Without grandiose words, the simple statement revealed her motivation for doing good deeds, plain and true.
There are always unsung heroes, not necessarily dazzling, but steadfastly glowing with warmth. Just like “Granny Cotton-Shoes,” they ― low-profile and practical ― generally uphold traditional Chinese virtues, doing what they can to help those in need and offering a consistent stream of love year after year.
Such warm acts of kindness by ordinary individuals often subtly instill hope in society and nurture greater expectations for the future.
这样的凡人善举,每每令人心生暖意;不知不觉间,对社会充满了希冀,对未来有了更多期许。
Ningbo, renowned as a “City of Love,” owes its reputation not only to people like “Shun qi zi ran” (an anonymous donor of “25-year generosity” exemplifying boundless benevolence), but to countless ordinary people who quietly derive joy from their own “tiny acts of kindness.”
In acknowledging “Granny Cotton-Shoes,” we would also like to extend our respect to Sun Peifen, who, for 16 years, has provided over 1,860 self-made “warm three-piece sets” (comprising a hat, gloves, and socks) to elderly individuals in need, and to three generations of the Shen family—Shen Xiufeng, Liu Haiping, and Shen Mengjie—who have been organizing a charity breakfast at the “Porridge Shop for Hundred-Year-Olds.”
Compassion courses through this port city’s veins as countless selfless individuals weave a web of love, spreading kindness through their small but impactful actions.
