Chinese and Spanish Artistry Unveiled at Ningbo Duo Exhibition
On January 15th, “Leap and Reinvent: Rafael Romero & Luo Qi Duo Exhibition” opened at Tianyige Museum in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province of east China. The exhibition features over 150 works by Chinese artist Luo Qi and Spanish artist Rafael Romero, offering visitors a dazzling and cross-cultural feast with unique artistry.
Renowned as an influential art theorist and practitioner, Luo was actively involved in the literary and artistic trends of China in the 1980s and 1990s and has taught at the China Academy of Art for over 30 years. His paintings are generally concise and minimalist, resembling engravings.
For the exhibition, Luo engages in a reinterpretation of Western medieval architecture, manuscripts, sculptures, and paintings. In his 90 pieces titled “Medieval Notes”, Chinese pictographs are intertwined with the imagery from Western medieval manuscripts. Additionally, over ten pieces of Luo’s “Ethiopian Notes” are on display.
Romero is currently a professor and the head of the M.I.M.A program (Art Materials and Memory Science) at the Faculty of the Fine Arts in the University of Barcelona. He also serves as a committee member of the Art Department of the Education Ministry of the Catalan Government and the president of the ARAPAU Artist Association at the University of Barcelona.
For over 30 years, the Spanish professor has devoted all his energy to maturing his artistic expression in painting. Specializing in traditional and contemporary painting techniques, materials, and processes, he skillfully utilises elements such as form, lines, and colors to express his aesthetic ideas. His paintings leave ample room for the imagination, with strong contrasts and free brushstrokes. Additionally, he has explored the delicate yet powerful strokes of Chinese painting in his creative endeavors.
The artworks presented by Romero in the exhibition were exclusively created in Ningbo. He aimed to introduce the local audience to his distinctive palette by rendering his observations of the city in rich colors, including fish, cats, swimmers, ships and scenery.
The exhibition will run until February 25th and is hosted by Ningbo’s Tianyige Museum and co-sponsored by the Tagus International Art Center and AAmA International Art Center in Milan.
