By Aynur Schuermann There are many stories I could tell about my time here in Ningbo, but the one that touches me most is this one: In my first months, I often got lost in this city. I couldn’t call anyone or ask for help, because I didn’t know where I was at all. Asking people for help on the street was not an option, because I couldn’t speak Chinese at that time. The only thing I had was our Chinese address written on a yellow post-it note. In these situations I really felt helpless, because most of the taxi drivers refused to take me home. In their opinion I lived too far away from the city center. Now I understand that they couldn’t earn money for the way back. Once an older man must have observed the stopping and driving away taxis and me. He came to me and asked me something; unfortunately I didn’t understand what he said. Then he pointed at my yellow post-it note which had my address written on it. After that, he nodded his head, stopped the next available taxi, opened the door for me, and showed me to sit, told the taxi driver something and waved to me goodbye. The taxi driver looked surprised at me and drove to my place without asking anything further. I just could say “Xiexie” to the nice man who was helping me while watching him getting back on his bicycle. He said something and smiled but I didn’t under-stand. I felt such thankfulness but couldn’t express it, and unfortunately never will! So my decision to learn Chinese and learn more about this city, and mostly these nice people living in this city, was influenced by this man. Now my Chinese has im-proved a lot, and I'm glad that I can do voluntary work to give something back to this city.
