The China-CEEC Expo, scheduled to take place in Ningbo from June 8 to 11, is a global trade convention, approved by the Central Government and hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, China's Ministry of Commerce and its Trade Development Bureau, the Ningbo Municipal Government, and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce.
This year, Serbia and the Czech Republic are the Guest Countries of Honor; Anhui province is the Guest Province of Honor.
Top officials from China and CEECs such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Poland, Slovenia, and Hungary delivered online and in-person speeches to celebrate the opening of the Expo.
With a total floor area of 200,000 square meters, the Expo features trade shows under three categories: the CEEC Exhibition, the International Consumer Goods Exhibition, and the Permanent Exhibition of Imported Commodities.
Inside the Ningbo International Convention and Exhibition Center, 425 exporters from CEECs were displaying their products—wines, food, machinery, equipment, yachts, light planes, and more—to 7,000 professional buyers looking to close deals.
"This is the first in-person Expo after the pandemic, and we knew that the buyers would come," Leon Meredyk, business development manager of Polish trading firm Vici Group, told the correspondent on Tuesday.
Vici Group shipped 2,200 containers of dairy products to China in 2020. "We aim at 3,200 containers [this year]. Our previous experience with the Expo has been very fruitful and I think this time the results will also be good," Meredyk said.
Expanding Commerce
and Strengthening Ties
As the host city of the China-CEEC Expo & International Consumer Goods Fair, Ningbo is transforming itself into the main import and export portal for the booming trade between China and CEECs.
"We opened an office in Ningbo this year because we are interested in the city's competitive logistics sector, which allows imported goods to be distributed across East China at a lower cost," said Wang Wenjia, general manager of Zhejiang Defei Supply Chain Management.
"In 2014, I heard that Ningbo had a special exhibition for Central and Eastern European commodities, so I decided to come," said Huang Dongdong, head of Ningbo Kewei Trading Co. "Business has thrived since then and we import tens of thousands of helmets from Poland every year."
Today, more than 90% of firefighters in Jiangsu province use Polish helmets imported via Ningbo.
Ningbo, as an important city of the Belt and Road Initiative, has played a pivotal role in promoting China-CEEC cooperation.
The China-CEEC trade index, jointly released by the General Administration of Customs and the Ningbo Municipal Government, is currently 273.80 points, up 4% month-on-month and 28.6% year-on-year, indicating that China's import and export with CEE countries has been growing steadily.
"The trade index is expected to provide a quantitative basis for the formulation of trade policies and guide Chinese enterprises in conducting trade with their CEE counterparts," said Li Kuiwen, head of the General Administration of Customs' statistics and analysis department.
Deepening Future
China-CEEC Partnership
Trading is the main topic at this year's China-CEEC Expo & International Consumer Goods Fair. Ningbo has played an indispensable role in boosting two-way investment between China and CEECs.
From January to April this year, Ningbo's imports and exports to CEECs were 11.96 billion yuan, an increase of 48.8% year-on-year. The city has achieved import and export volume growth with 13 CEECs during this period.
The value of imports and exports between Ningbo and Poland in the first four months of 2021 was 3.94 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 32%, accounting for 32.9% of the city's total trade with CEECs for the same period.
To further facilitate the bilateral trade between China and CEECs, Ningbo has rolled out a series of measures, such as establishing the CEE Commodities Procurement Alliance, designing favorable policies, and granting import access to a wider range of products.
Chen Youxiang, president of Ninghua Group, a leading enterprise in the Procurement Alliance, said the Group will strive to build a business cooperation platform for CEECs.
Ninghua will cooperate with embassies, consulates, and business associations to upgrade products, boost culture and tourism, and facilitate two-way opening-up of logistics, finance, and trade.
"Specifically, we will make Ningbo the top destination for CEE products entering the Chinese market, through integration of supply chains, services, sales channels, brand incubation and centralized procurement," Chen said. Ningbo is also strengthening cooperation with large supermarket chains and e-commerce platforms and expanding the sales channels.
