    According to the Report on the Work of the Government in 2023, China will be accelerating the digital transformation of traditional industries and SMEs to enhance their sophistication, smart technology capabilities, and environmental sustainability. 

    As one of China's advanced manufacturing powerhouses, Ningbo is exploring new models for green development through initiatives such as upgrading industrial value chains, reducing emissions, promoting resource recycling and utilization, implementing clean production processes, using environmentally-friendly materials, and digitalizing production.

    Bagasse Recycling

    Bagasse, also known as sugarcane pulp, is a by-product of the sugarcane industry. Instead of being thrown away, bagasse has become a real "cash cow" for one Ningbo business.

    "We are actively exploring techniques to turn bagasse and other plant fibres into fully degradable utensils such as disposable lunch boxes and cups," said Chen Lin, deputy general manager of Ningbo Homelink Eco-iTech.

    Ningbo Homelink Eco-iTech's partners are household names: IKEA, Walmart, and USFood. The company also supplies cups, lids, straws, and bags for many of China's most popular tea beverage brands.

    The company's success is inseparable from its continuous R&D investment in the field of new materials.

    Bagasse contains a large amount of fibre, which makes it an ideal eco-friendly raw material for disposable tableware.

    "Our researchers have developed a film made from corn starch to line the inside of bagasse tableware, so that liquids and grease would not seep through," said Chen.

    Green utensils made from bagasse can be naturally degraded without polluting the soil and air, while providing nutrient for crops. These new products are now in mass production.

    Greener Dyeing 

    In the factories of Ningbo Consinee New Fibre Technology, there is no whiff of chemicals in the air. The floors are surprisingly clean. 

    The newly automated and intelligent production line has not only enhanced the production efficiency of the company, but also made it "greener". 

    When a piece of textile needs dyeing, a robot selects the correct dye auxiliaries from more than 80 options, then injects the right amount into the feeder vessels according to the dyeing recipe of the corresponding order. The feeder is connected to the dyeing vat. When the dyes are fully dissolved, they automatically flow into the dyeing vat. The whole process is completely automated.

    According to Jin Guang, the technical director of the company, the new production line only takes up one-fifth of the factory area, but has two to three times the capacity of the original line while using significantly less energy.

    Due to these upgrades, Ningbo Consinee New Fibre Technology was named a "National Green Factory" and a "National Green Supply Chain Enterprise". 16 of its products were named "National Green Design Products".

    "The wool industry must reduce emissions and embrace circular economy philosophies to increase efficiency with the lowest possible energy consumption," Jin said.

    From Manufacturing to Services

    In Helong WPC's factory, more than 70 production lines are converting recycled plant fibres and HDPE plastic into wood-plastic composites for flooring, wall panels, guardrails, and fences.

    As a "National Green Factory", the company not only deploys smart, green, automated production equipment, but also uses recycled wood powder, bamboo powder and plastics as raw materials. An in-house recycling process treats the factory's own production waste.

    Through marketing efforts, Helong WPC's new wood-plastic composite materials have already gained a foothold in the international market, though its share in the domestic market has yet to rise. 

    To contribute to China's "dual carbon" goals, Helong WPC decided to supply not only green products, but also green services. It now offers a full range of turnkey solutions for courtyard construction and decoration projects. 

    "This decision is partly to further enhance our reputation and thus expand our market share. But more importantly, we want to bring green wood products into thousands of households and help create a world where humans coexist with nature in harmony," said Ma Qingjiang, Chairman of Helong WPC.
